Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime) – Kalyn’s Kitchen

I’ve made a lot of variations on deviled eggs, but these Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime) are one of my favorites! And you can make them more or less spicy, depending on what you prefer.

PIN Spicy Deviled Eggs to try them later!

There must be thousands of deviled egg recipes in the world, but one of my favorites has to be these Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime). What do you think about the sound of deviled eggs that are just a bit spicy with those Southwestern flavors?

And this recipe has been back in the archives on my blog with an old photo that was blurry and didn’t really show off how good these were, so recently Kara and I gave this recipe an update.

We didn’t change it much other than switching out yogurt for sour cream (which I’ve used in this recipe through the years since I don’t always have plain yogurt in my fridge), and cutting down a bit on the amount of lime juice. Of course you can add more lime juice to taste if you’re someone like me who likes a lot of lime!)

And this week I bet a lot of people are making perfect hard-boiled eggs and dyeing the eggs for Easter, so you might have a surplus of hard-boiled eggs later in the week. If so, I hope you consider giving these Spicy Deviled Eggs a try!

What ingredients do you need?

(This is only a list of ingredients; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

How spicy are the spicy deviled eggs?

If you use the 1/4 teaspoon of ground Chipotle chile pepper that the recipe specifies, these are only slightly spicy. But once you taste the egg mixture, you can make it a bit more spicy if you prefer!

What if you don’t have ground Chipotle for this recipe?

If you don’t have ground Chipotle chili pepper and don’t want to buy it just for this recipe, I would use a small amount of Green Tabasco Sauce (affiliate link) to add the spicy flavor. And if you prefer regular Jalapeno flavor over the smoky flavor of Chipotle chiles (which are dried smoked Jalapeno peppers) you might even like the Green Tabasco better.

How many spicy deviled eggs does this recipe make?

This recipe makes 12 deviled egg halves, or 6 servings if you eat two halves, but it can easily be double or tripled if you want to make deviled eggs for a crowd; enjoy! And I start with 7 eggs because usually the whites get mangled on at least one egg, so if you’re not worried about the looks you might end up with 14 egg halves!

How low in carbs are the Spicy Deviled Eggs?

For this recipe, two deviled egg halves (one egg) has about 3 net carbs.

How to Make Spicy Deviled Eggs (with Chipotle and Lime):

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. First, make perfect hard-boiled eggs using one of the methods recommended in my post.
  2. Let eggs cool, peel, and cut in half.
  3. Remove yolks and put into bowl. Mash yolks well with a fork.
  4. Slice green onions, and finely chop with chef’s knife.
  5. Mix together lime juice and ground Chipotle chile powder (or use about 1/2 tsp Green Tabasco Sauce if you prefer.)
  6. Add lime-Chipotle mixture to yolks.
  7. Then stir in mayo, mustard, sour cream (or more mayo), salt, and half the chopped green onions.
  8. Taste for seasoning to see if you want more lime juice, mustard, ground Chipotle chile powder, or salt.
  9. Stir until mixture is well combined.
  10. Arrange eggs white halves on serving plate.
  11. Use a rubber scraper to scoop yolk mixture into a small plastic bag. Cut off one corner of the bag (look for it!) and squeeze from the top to force the yolk mixture out the hole, into the egg halves.
  12. When all egg white halves are filled with yolk mixture, sprinkle with remaining green onions.
  13. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until serving.

Ingredients

  • 7 eggs (preferably about a week old)
  • 2 T mayo
  • 2 T  sour cream (see notes)
  • 1 T fresh lime juice (or more)
  • 1 T yellow mustard (not Dijon)
  • 1/4 tsp. ground Chipotle chile peppers (more or less to taste, see notes)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (see notes)
  • 2 green onions, green part only, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. First, make perfect hard-boiled eggs. I always cook one extra egg, because usually the white part gets mangled on at least one.
  2. Let eggs cool, then peel and cut in half crosswise.
  3. Carefully remove yolks and put into a flat bowl. (That makes it easier to mash them.)
  4. Mash yolks well with a fork
  5. Slice green onions, and finely chop with chef’s knife.
  6. Mix together lime juice and ground Chipotle chile powder. (If you don’t do this, you’ll have large flecks of chile powder in the deviled yolk mixture. The chile powder won’t dissolve completely, but adding it to the lime juice does make it blend in better.)
  7. Add lime-Chipotle mixture to mashed yolks, then stir in mayo, mustard, sour cream (or more mayo), salt, and half the chopped green onions.
  8. Taste for seasoning to see if you want more lime juice, mustard, Chipotle chile powder, or salt.
  9. Stir until mixture is well combined.
  10. Arrange eggs white halves on serving plate.
  11. Use a rubber scraper to scoop yolk mixture into a small plastic bag. Cut a small piece off one corner of the bag and squeeze from the top to force the yolk mixture out the hole, into the egg halves. (Filling the eggs can also be done with a spoon or a cake decorating tool.)
  12. When all egg white shells are filled with deviled yolk mixture, sprinkle with remaining chopped green onions.
  13. Serve immediately or refrigerate until serving.

Notes

Use all mayo and skip the sour cream if you prefer.

Use any spicy ground chile you prefer, or substitute about 1/2 tsp. Green Tabasco Sauce for the Ground Chipotle Chile in this recipe.
