Before I talk about how easy it is to make this Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce let me ask, how do you feel about tartar sauce? I’m sure some food snobs might consider it to be a boring condiment, but I absolutely love it and I don’t think I’d ever pass up the tartar sauce in a restaurant if I was having some kind of mild-flavored fish.
Unfortunately, most tartar sauce you buy in a jar is not that great, and purchased tartar sauce often has sugar, so it’s not diet friendly for many people. And since I’m always trying to eat more fish and I love tartar sauce so much, I decided to come up with a tasty diet-friendly homemade tartar sauce recipe that didn’t have sugar and was loaded with flavor.
It took a bit of experimenting, but this recipe for Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce that I now make regularly combines Greek Yogurt (or sour cream), mayo, dill weed, capers, and dill pickle relish or chopped dill pickles, and it’s the most delicious tartar sauce recipe I’ve ever tried!
I think this delicious homemade tartar sauce tastes great on most any kind of fish, and if you like tartar sauce as much as I do, I bet you’ll end up loving this recipe and making it over and over when you have fish on the menu!

What if you don’t like Greek Yogurt?
I did love this homemade tartar sauce with the slight tangy flavor notes that the Greek Yogurt added, but you can also make it with sour cream if you prefer. You can use full-fat or low-fat dairy, whichever fits with your way of eating.
Can you make homemade tartar sauce without a food processor?
Using a food processor makes it easy to whip up the double dill tartar sauce, but if you don’t have one you can definitely mix the ingredients together in a bowl.

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)
- You’ll need Greek yogurt, mayo, chopped capers, dill pickle relish or dill pickles, and dill weed.
- I originally made this with a spice blend called Bon Appetit, but now that’s no longer available so I use Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link).
- Measure out Greek yogurt and mayo.
- Add chopped capers, dill pickle relish (or chopped dill pickles), dill weed, and Beau Monde Seasoning.
- You can whisk the ingredients together in a bowl, but I blended them in the bowl attachment of my Immersion Blender (affiliate link).
- That’s it! The finished homemade tartar sauce should be somewhat chunky, and have a strong dill flavor with a bit of tang from the yogurt and a little creaminess from the mayo.

- 2 T capers, drained and finely chopped
- 3 T dill pickle relish (see notes)
- 1/2 tsp. Beau Monde Seasoning
Instructions
- You can whisk this together in a bowl or use the bowl attachment of an Immersion Blender (affiliate link) like I did, but don’t over-process if you use the immersion blender.
- Measure out the Greek yogurt (or sour cream) and mayo and whisk together or blend.
- Add the dried dill weed, chopped capers, dill pickle relish (or chopped pickles) and Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link) (affiliate link).
- Whisk or blend to combine. Mixture should be chunky.
- Refrigerate for a few hours before using for best flavor.
- This will keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
Notes
Use sour cream instead of Greek Yogurt for a slightly less tangy sauce if you prefer.
You can use full-fat or reduced-fat Greek yogurt or sour cream, but higher-fat products will usually have fewer carbs. Use full-fat or light mayo, but full-fat mayo will have less carbs.
Be sure to use dill pickle relish without sugar (or use finely chopped dill pickles if you prefer; I love to use my favorite dill pickles for this recipe.)

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
This Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce is a super low-carb version of tartar sauce, and low-carb or Keto dieters would love this made with full-fat Greek Yogurt (or sour cream) and full-fat mayo. If you prefer less fat, be careful not to choose a reduced fat Greek yogurt or reduced fat mayo that has added sugar if you’re eating this for a low-carb diet. With the right reduced-fat Greek Yogurt and mayo without added sugar, this can work for the original South Beach Diet.
