Carbs in coffee charts

How many carbs are in your coffee depends on how it is made and what you have added. So get to know the best options and keep a limit on how many cups of coffee you drink each day.

Milky coffees such as a cappuccino, flat white, or long iced coffee have a high carb count. Iced coffees served with added sugar, sweetened whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and marshmallows are the worst coffee to order.

There may be hidden carbs in your sugar-free coffee creamer too, depending on which sweeteners have been used.

These carbs in coffee charts help to explain the best way to order a coffee while on the keto diet or low-carb diet.

Is coffee creamer keto-friendly?

Most store-bought coffee creamers have added sugars, corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, or artificial flavors. Coffee creamers can be liquid or powder to add to your coffee.

Adding a flavored creamer to your coffee is a fun way to enjoy coffee, but most coffee creamers found in grocery stores are avoided the ketogenic diet because of the high net carbs.

The good news is this keto creamer tastes just like your traditional coffee creamer but with almost zero carbs (0.5 net grams of carbs) and has filling healthy fats and is friendly to your blood sugar.

1 serving of keto coffee creamer has 0.5g net carbs, 0.5 grams of protein, 3.7 grams of fat, and 35 calories. There is no added sugar.

Ingredients

Only four ingredients are needed to make this dairy-free keto coffee creamer recipe.

Once you have made the plain coffee creamer you can add your favorite flavors. We’ll show you how to make five flavors under the variations section below so you can make your favorite flavor.

All the ingredients for keto coffee creamer measured and put into a clear glass bowl.
The best keto-friendly coffee creamer recipe
  • almond milk – always check the label for any hidden carbs in your unsweetened almond milk.
  • coconut milk – make sure you buy a can with no sugar added.
  • sweetener – the most popular keto sweeteners are erythritol, stevia drops (with stevia extract), allulose, and monk fruit sweeteners. Always add more or less sweetener according to your taste preferences.
  • xanthan gum – optional for a thicker keto creamer.

See the recipe card for exact quantities, full instructions, and nutritional information.

Instructions

Making this keto coffee creamer recipe is quick and easy. It only takes about 5 minutes to make. Then you can enjoy a cup of hot coffee while you wait for it to cool enough for storage.

Mixing the sweetener and xanthan gum together in the saucepan to prevent clumps.

Mix the sweetener and xanthan gum together in your saucepan with the heat off. This helps to prevent clumps from forming.

Heating the coffee creamer in a sauce pan.

Next, whisk the unsweetened almond milk and coconut milk into the sweetener. Heat on medium-low heat until the creamer comes to a simmer, and the sweetener dissolves.

Cover your pan with a lid and remove from heat. Let the creamer cool to room temperature. If flavoring, now is the time to mix in your chosen flavors.

Once the keto creamer has cooled pour it into a storage jar with an airtight lid. Store it in the refrigerator.

Hint: the longer the creamer cooks the thicker it will be. The creamer only needs to cook long enough to warm it through and dissolve the sweetener.

Substitutions

Need to replace an ingredient that doesn’t fit with your dietary restrictions? See the list below for recommended substitutions.

  • Canned coconut milk – coconut cream or heavy cream is a great replacement for coconut milk. Using heavy cream will add dairy to your creamer.
  • Almond milk – use a different type of nut or seed-based milk instead. Unsweetened oat milk or rice milk can be used in place of almond milk if needed. Your creamer will get all its creaminess from the coconut milk.
  • Xanthan gum – this can be completely omitted. It is used to thicken the creamer but isn’t essential.

I do not recommend substituting both coconut milk and almond milk when making this recipe otherwise it will be a different recipe entirely and the results will vary considerably.

Variations

Turn your keto creamer recipe into five different flavors by using flavor extracts or common spices! Pick and choose your favorites.

You can split the measurements in half and turn one batch of creamer into multiple flavors! Each one will have slightly higher carb counts.

  1. Mocha coffee creamer – add 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder to your creamer for a deep chocolate flavor.
  2. Vanilla coffee creamer – add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract for a rich French vanilla flavor.
  3. Hazelnut coffee creamer – only 2 teaspoon hazelnut extract is needed for this flavor since hazelnut extract can be quite strong. You can always add more to meet your tastes.
  4. Cinnamon coffee creamer – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon is plenty to make cinnamon creamer.
  5. Pumpkin spice coffee creamer – you’ll need 1 tablespoon pumpkin puree and 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice seasoning to make pumpkin spice creamer.

You could also add peppermint extract and cocoa powder to make a festive peppermint sugar-free creamer and a hot peppermint mocha.

Equipment

I made my keto creamer on the stove in a small saucepan. However, if you need to you could easily heat the creamer together in the microwave. I’d heat it in 1-minute increments.

Most importantly you will need a large storage jar, two smaller jars, or mason jars with lids to store your keto creamer in. You could use a plastic food storage container with a lid, but it won’t pour correctly into your morning coffee and may easily spill out of this type of container.

Storage

Your homemade keto coffee creamer is best stored in the refrigerator after it has cooled to room temperature.

Since this creamer is dairy-free it will stay good in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Be sure to store the creamer in a cleaned storage container with a well-fitting lid that won’t spill easily.

Top tip

You only need to heat your coffee creamer long enough for the sweetener to dissolve and the creamer to be warmed through. Cooking the creamer for too long will make it too thick. If you need to thin the creamer add a bit more almond milk.
