Vegan Pigs In A Blanket

📖 Variations

While this recipe doesn’t have too much room for changes, there are a couple dietary and flavor options I wanted to highlight:

Gluten-Free Option: Easily make this into a gluten free pigs in blankets recipe! Use your favorite gluten-free tortillas and ensure that the veggie dogs of choice do not contain any wheat or other gluten-derived ingredients.

Carrot Dogs: Instead of store bought veggie dogs, I sometimes like to switch things up by using carrots as the base! Boil baby carrots until fork tender and then marinate in your favorite sauce for about 2 hours (or overnight). I like to use a combination of soy sauce, veggie broth, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Grill the carrots until cooked through and then use them as carrot dogs!

Make It Cheesy: When rolling the hot dog pieces into the tortilla strips, feel free to add a small amount of vegan or regular cheese (not too much since it will get messy). You can also sprinkle some shredded cheese over top before baking.

Herbs & Spices: Add new flavors to the batter with some garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, everything but the bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or nutritional yeast!

🍽 Serving Suggestions

I love to serve these tasty vegan pigs in blankets as an afternoon snack after school. Or, I’ll make up a batch for a party and enjoy with a variety of dips. You can even enjoy these for a family friendly dinner by pairing with fresh veggies and so much more! Here are my top suggestions to help guide you:

Dipping Sauces: What would this dish be without some tasty dip options? I like to offer a variety of dips with classics like ketchup, mustard, and ranch. But for more unique options, I also serve sides of vegan bbq sauce, mustard bbq sauce, vegan buffalo chicken dip, vegan honey mustard, and vegan cheese sauce.

Party Appetizers: For parties, I serve these on a table with other healthy, tasty sides and appetizers. Some of my go-to’s include a healthy potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, air fryer tortilla chips, corn salsa, homemade guacamole, and a mixed green salad.

For Dinner: If I am making this recipe as part of my family’s dinner I always like to make it balanced with some healthy fats and fiber. I pair them with roasted green beans and potatoes or cheesy baked asparagus. For a more filling meal, I like to add some extra protein with vegetarian baked beans or chili mac to each plate!

đź«™ Storage Instructions

Whether you have leftover vegetarian pigs in a blanket or want to prepare these in advance, here is my suggested storage method:

Fridge: Once cooked, I store these in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Before sealing in the storage container, it is important to let them cool. Otherwise they’ll steam and get soggy.

Reheating: Reheating dairy-free pigs in a blanket is easy! To reheat with the crispiest results I recommend using an oven, toaster oven, or air fryer at 350° Fahrenheit until warm. If I need to warm them in a hurry, I just microwave for 30 seconds or until heated through!

âť“Recipe FAQs

How can I keep my pigs in a blanket warm?

When I am serving these meatless pigs in a blanket for a party and want to keep them warm, I place them in the oven at 200 – 225 degrees Fahrenheit and refill the serving platter as needed. Alternatively, you can serve them in a slow cooker but they might become a bit soggy. These can also be served at room temperature, but be sure to put them away after a few hours so they do not go bad.

Can I use puff pastry instead of tortillas?

Yes you can! It just won’t be as healthy, but it’ll still work well. Make sure to choose vegan puff pastry to keep this recipe vegan-friendly. Then wrap the vegan sausages as you would with the tortillas, and brush them with almond milk so that you get a golden crust. Bake at 400 degrees for about 12-15 minutes until cooked through.
